👨🏽‍💻 IT engineer and audiovisual communicator

He’s been doing stuff for a lot of years!

My name is Francisco Torres and I usually like what I do.

My background is in computer engineering and audiovisual communication.

I currently work as a consultant-developer specialized in WordPress and I am an active part of the WordPress community.

Education

I studied IT engineering at the University of Granada, which is important, but honestly, at this point that is the least important since I have been working as an IT for more than 12 years.

I also did media studies at the University of Granada, just for the heck of it, but I want you to know that it has been very useful in my professional career.

Other than that, I’ve done very random things like MIT’s 6.002x: Circuits and Electronics course (2012).

Work

My professional life began in 2008 as a “Research Support Developer” at the University of Granada, it was my first professional contact with PHP.

I also worked in the media between 2008 and 2010: in the newspaper “Granada Hoy” as system administrator, in “Canal 21 TV” as camera assistant and as audiovisual technician filming a series with “David Eating”.

In addition, I was an editor at ecomovilidad.net Granada from 2009 to 2015. ¡Muéveteverde! 2010 award, bitácoras 2010, consorcio de transportes de Madrid 2012.

In 2012 I founded GIGA4, which grew in 2018 with the fusion with MrFoxTalbot and the addition of partners. We are a small company specialized in the technical needs of WordPress sites.

Nowadays

I work at GIGA4 where, in addition to the consulting and development we offer, I am in charge of the administration of the company, the development of tools and processes to improve our work and customer service.

I volunteer at the WordPress.org foundation thanks to the sponsorship of Siteground through the “Five for the future” program.
Here I develop my duty as member and rep of the plugins team, maintaining the official WordPress.org plugin repository, managing the team, training new members and developing internal tools that have helped reduce the plugin review time by 2 to 3 times compared to classic tools.

Other experiences and events

WordPress

I’m specialized in consulting and web development on WordPress, I’m part of the community and I participate in talks and events, teaching and learning.

Journalism

Communication is the basis of life in society: it excites, makes you laugh, cry, keeps you informed and uninformed, entertains, educates, manipulates, smoothes cultural differences and creates them.

One of the things I am most proud of is that I have made journalism for my city and totally independent journalismwhere the topics are obtained directly from the street, you talk about them because you are passionate about them, the statements are based on data and research, and you offer them directly to the reader without going through a mediator to retouch them.

  • First live broadcasts of the first plenary session of the Granada City Council, #plenogr, 2012.
  • Attendance at the Conference on Communication and Justice, 2010.

Audiovisual

I love surprising and funny productions, my reference could be “Pedro Almodovar”, for his chaotic narrative where the funny meets the strange, the extroverted, the irreverent and the unusual.

My audiovisual work has almost-always been behind the camera, I have a technical nature although I also intervene in the creative process. I know the basics about camera handling, audio and filming production.

Open Source Software

My professional life has developed thanks to the open source software philosophy, I like the freedoms offered by the GPL, if we have advanced so much it has been thanks to this, thank it you too.
